Another measure to establish an accountability-based environment is to assign a unique digital certificate to the affiant’s identity. The digital certificate is used with the affiant’s interaction with the organization’s network.  This ensures that transactions within the network can be traced back to the individual and the digital certificate provides the ability to digitally sign documents. Why is this important? News reports about digital hackers getting into organizations’ networks and impersonating employees to request fraudulent payments to a fictitious company are happening more frequently. Beyond that, nefarious hackers impersonating high-level employee(s) can gain access to the organization’s sensitive data and cause significant unrecoverable damage to the organization’s operations.
